Anybody that has kids knows that travelling with preschoolers can get a little rowdy. A lot of parents, myself included, often wish that we had just stayed home.
Fear not weary traveling parents. There is hope. Planning is key when introducing your preschoolers to the joys of the road trip.
It can be as simple as providing some entertainment. A bored child is a cranky, difficult child. Ask each child to choose three to five toys to bring with them. Helping choose the activities can make the child feel a part of the trip, and they are likely to pick activities they will enjoy.
Don't just let the kids choose everything, pack in a few surprises that you know the kids will love to mix things up a bit. The element of surprise will always help to break the monotony of a long road trip. One great idea is window markers that lets the children draw on the windows and is easily washed off. Coloring books, crayons and pocket games will also help.
Eventually the toys and games will lose their ability to entertain. This is when you turn to fun and interesting road games. You could try counting games such as counting the number of blue cars or see who can spot the most number of out of state travelers by their license plates. If your kids are older they may enjoy a competition to see who can spot a specific letter or number the most number of times. I remember my brother and I use to have fun trying to make sentences with words starting from each letter in the license plates. Parents and kids can take turns telling a story, round robin style. One person starts, telling the beginning of the story and then passes it on to someone else. As the story gets passed around each person will add to it.
Why is it, when you're miles from anywhere, that a child will always complain that they are hungry? Hungry kids are cranky grumbly kids. Never leave home without a cooler full of fun, easily consumed snacks. Sliced apples and peanut butter, celery stuffed with cream cheese, grilled cheese sandwiches cut into fun shapes, veggie sticks, or bananas make great on-the-road snacks for preschoolers. Choose drinks with a minimal amount of sugar for the trip. With no way to burn this excess energy off your kids will likely become hyper and restless. If you supply fruit juice make sure you don't do it in a juice box or pouch. When your child squeezes the container, juice will spray the entire car.
Sitting in a car gives them no way to burn all that excess energy off. If you supply fruit juice make sure you don't do it in a juice box or pouch. Children can't help themselves with these things and will always experiment with a good squeeze just to see what happens. If everyone is covered in sticky juice the trip can become a sour journey indeed.
