Fender Standard Stratocaster Review

By Keung Ng

The Fender Standard Stratocaster is made in Fender's facility in Mexico. Maintaining the Fender tradition, the Standard Strat has the nice-action neck in maple, comfort-contoured body in alder, 3 single-coiled pickups and standard synchronized tremelo. You can choose between a maple or rosewood fingerboard.

Features: This guitar has a 21-fret maple neck for lightning-fast action. It comes with the classic synchronized trem that is, by the way, perfect for that intro on "Foxy Lady". The main volume control, the tone controls, the three single coils, along with the 5-way switch allow you to play a wide variety of music. Also, the recessed jack is a nice touch. Some people are concerned with the fact that the guitar is made in Mexico, but when you play with it, you will find that it is really not an issue. At the end of the day, it all comes down to how it feels and plays which make the MIM thing irrelevant.

Sound: This guitar is suitable for just about any style of music, which is what a Strat is meant for. The 5-way switch allows you to play around and experiment with any sound from metal to blues. It can practically handle anything. However, it doesn't perfrom as well for heavier metal. If you play a lot of punk and grunge, you'll fall in love with the sound. You can play it through a Marshall MG10CD amp and it can already make some serious noise. It has a bright, rich Strat sound which is immediately recognizable. You can get a full bassy sound and a crystal clear tones from the bridge pickup. The tone control, along with the 5-way selector give you the opportunity to make a wide range of sound from bright to rich.

Action, Fit and Finish: It has a pretty good setup from the factory, although it takes some time like about a week to break in a Strat. The action is good, not too high or too low, although it could have been a bit lower. The D string may make a slight buzz when it is played unplugged. However, it is not such a big issue if you play it through an amp. The black finish looks awesome. It may show up some fingerprints but it's not as badly as you'd think.

Overall: This Strat matches most of the styles of music perfectly. It is a guitar with great musical versatility and durability, especially at the price range. If you put on a better bridge, it would be perfect.
